When families recognize that an aging parent may be at risk for falls, their first instinct is often to call a contractor to install grab bars, ramps, or other home modifications. While contractors play an important role in implementing physical changes within the home, they are not trained to evaluate the complex relationship between a person’s health, functional abilities, cognition, habits, medications, and environment.
This is where a Home Safety Consultant provides a level of expertise that goes far beyond construction recommendations.
As a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS), and a Certified Fall Prevention Specialist (CFPS) with a backgrund in Occupational Therapist and a Master’s degree in Gerontology,, I evaluate not only the home environment but also the individual living within it.
I ask questions such as:
- Can this person safely transfer into and out of the shower?
- Are they experiencing subtle balance changes that increase fall risk?
- Are medications contributing to dizziness or confusion?
- Is the current layout supporting independence or creating unnecessary hazards?
- Will today’s recommendations continue to meet their needs as they age?
A contractor can install a grab bar exactly where it is requested.
I determine whether a grab bar is actually needed, where it should be placed based on clinical evidence, and what additional strategies are necessary to maximize safety and independence.
My recommendations extend beyond equipment and modifications. They may include:
- Personalized fall prevention strategies
- Functional mobility training
- Caregiver education
- Home organization techniques
- Recommendations for durable medical equipment
- Aging-in-place planning
- Referrals to other healthcare professionals when appropriate
The goal is not simply to modify a house.
The goal is to preserve dignity, confidence, independence, and quality of life.
When families invest in comprehensive home safety consultation, they gain something invaluable: the peace of mind that every recommendation has been thoughtfully tailored to their loved one’s unique needs.
Because aging in place isn’t about adding equipment.
It’s about helping people continue living safely in the place they call home.
